This masterclass will provide insight into workers’ compensation processes and the importance of rehabilitation and return to work from a workplace health and safety professional and a workplace health and safety lawyer, providing insight and knowledge from practical and legal perspectives.

The masterclass will cover:

  • Insight on appointing a Rehabilitation and Return coordinator (RRTWC) plus the rehabilitation and return to work process

About Matthew Smith, Principal Lawyer, Head of Employment, Safety & Regulatory, DWF

Matthew advises businesses of all sizes on safety, regulation and industrial relations and specialises in resolving highly sensitive issues in often acrimonious litigated matters. He has more than 20 years of experience and works with clients across various industries, including manufacturing, transport, construction, education, healthcare, mining and resources, and retail.

Matthew has extensive experience in the legal and strategic management of serious safety incidents, advising on incident management from the day of the incident up to and including management of safety prosecutions and coronial inquests. He and his team have successfully defended dozens of regulatory matters, including several large safety, transport and environmental prosecutions. He is skilled at resolving workplace issues and restoring relationships between unions, the workplace and regulators with minimal business disruption.

About Darren Sharry, National Manager, DWF Risk

Darren is a qualified WHS professional with more than 20 years of experience in a broad range of industries. He specialises in risk and incident management, incident investigations, WHS management systems and documentation, strategy, leadership and governance. Darren’s skills and experience equip him to engage with workers at all levels of any organisation and provide holistic solutions to facilitate improved safety performance.

Darren’s experience includes eight years with Work Health and Safety Queensland in a number of roles, including Principal Advisor and Principal Inspector. This experience gives Darren the ability to provide insight from a regulator’s perspective in the investigation process and the identification of significant breaches which may involve imminent risk to people. His private sector experience includes working for Master Builders Queensland as the HSE Manager and ten years in tier one construction and engineering contracting companies Lendlease and John Holland.
